Launched in April 2006, Gamers Gate started out as the download platform of Swedish publisher Paradox, which is known for its strong focus on PC hardcore strategy games. It now has developed into an independent spinoff providing a large selection of independent and most major publishers to an international audience. The shop received a major overhaul with the relaunch in November 2009 and now offers a convenient shopping experience. Additionally, Gamers Gate has been one of the first online stores to feature a payback system called Blue Points.

Background Info

At its start in 2006, GamersGate was developed as a digital distribution system by Paradox Interactive to provide digital downloads in locations where retail distribution was not possible. It allows players to purchase and download games without the use of a client installed on the user’s computer. GamersGate currently carries over 2,200 digital downloads from more than 250 developers.

GamersGate allows users to buy online titles and download them without requiring users to install a software client on their computer. The homepage contains many options to help gamers sift through the titles they offer. Across the top, a menu bar features several genres that gamers may choose from. The central portion of the homepage features some of the more popular and promoted titles, while the right side shows various discounts.

After you have narrowed your search, several titles will be listed as thumbnails with the star rating and price listed below. There are usually too many games to fit on a single page, so you may have to use the arrows at the top or bottom of the list to scroll through the various pages. Other than pre-orders and new titles being listed first, there is no real organizational method for the listings, although you have the option of searching for specific titles by name at the top of the page.

Once you have found a title that gains your interest, click on its thumbnail to view the product description page. This page features the cover art, brief description, user rating, system requirements, price, reviews, and, of course, the option to purchase the game either as a gift or for yourself. You will need an account to purchase and download games from GamersGate, which you may create either after choosing to purchase a title or by visiting the “My Pages” section near the upper left. After you choose to buy online, GamersGame will provide the digital download to be installed on your computer.

Several problems have been reported about GamersGate from various customers. Many say they experience sporadic behavior from the site, citing that pages may become blank unexpectedly while attempting to purchase a title. Others have cited corrupted files that rendered games unusable, while many Mac users have claimed total incompatibility on titles that should work with Mac computers.

Comment: The GamersGate shop is somewhat lacking in discounts and sales, but it has many more games than Steam. Also, there doesn't seem to be bans for using proxies, which is a nice plus in my book :P I personally use only GG and Steam for my digital game purchases; they recently added an experience points system, which nets better offers the higher your level is, and a minion, which gives better offers on some genres (depending on the minion)

Comment: Great site bought 4-5 good from that site in a great good deal i visit it every day i am trying to get the achievements it has for the blue coins i really like that system with the level and achievements, Daily perfect deals awesome games almost every game on sale! hope they will continue this work and put more achievements and other stuff . Comment: Great summary of GamersGate. Thx. I'd like to add that they recently added a Achievement and XP point system. I guess it's supposed to increase customer loyalty. However, I find it a bit pointless. You even have a pet that is leveling up. Still pointless.

Comment: Gamersgate brings a lot of good things to the table but is not without its share of issues. Their Blue Points system is one of the better ideas going for the customer since, hey, you can get games completely for free just by buying other games. A good variety of titles are offered including some of the more obscure which might not find a home elsewhere but of course, still including all the major AAA releases. Gamersgate also offers regular sales which feature droves of hugely discounted titles. They also look to roll out a selection of free, ad-supported games in the future. Community features reward users with Blue Points by asking and answering questions via the Game Tutor mechanic as well as giving rewards for things such as writing game reviews. On the less-good side, Gamersgate's download system can be a bit of a pain. While some titles may be advertised as "DRM Free", this is not 100% true. When you get a game from GG, you get a small Installer file which manages the download and installation of a given title. Once downloaded, you may keep the files on your hard drive to re-install at another time but you will still need to do so via the Installer, which validates itself on-line before installation. Without getting too technical, this is basically because the setup files are stored semi-encrypted and though there are ways around using the Installer so that you are actually able to backup your game data, the task is needlessly obfuscated and can be troublesome. While this is not a dire issue overall, it is a bit of a misrepresentation and can definitely get in the way of easily backing up games. Overall, Gamersgate is a solid outlet with a great promotional gimmick going for it in the Blue Points system and regular bouts of serious price slashing, even if they might lack Valve's marketing finesse. Of course if you are in the States, this is another one you may get inconsistent or slow download rates with.
