Comment: Thanks for sharing this. I never bought anything at Gametap. I guess with this review I probably never will. I'm just wondering why the make it so user unfriendly. There are lots of download stores given good examples like GOG, Gamersgate or Steam. I guess they will have to learn the hard way that customer service is THE key to build a customer base of digital gamers - and price, obviously. :)

Comment: worst experience ever. Horrible payment system. They wait to "validate" your payment ( game keys are not sent till they check that). They give you the download link though. I started downloading the game I just purchased from them and 3 hours laters I got an email saying my paypal account was fraud. What a bullshit. I have paypal for over 5 yeas never had any problems. so I spend 6gb of my band for nothing... They say will refund me.. so far nothing...

Comment: Definitely a minimalist setup here but it is functional. No clients or downloaders, just direct file links. Has some basic community features. Seems to mostly just use DosBox integration to make older games readily playable on modern computers.

Comment: Unarguably, Steam is the greatest shopping platform in existence. Often mimicked, it has set a new standard for what direct download means. Nearly every game I have purchased since its inception has been through Steam. Phenomenal pricing, complete availability, and a simple yet satisfying interface make it easy and even fun to use. An enormous collection of demos, previews, and excellent interaction with MetaCritic make it the place to go to find, research, and purchase games. I have only had one poor experience with Steam, but I blame Microsoft and their God Awful Games for Windows Live platform for it. Steam has changed the game, and hopefully will continue to see success through this next radical generation of gaming.

Comment: I've gotten some pretty incredible deals from GMG, such as Deus Ex Human Revolutoin for $35 pre-ordered, and Dead Island for $39 a couple days after it came out. As far as I can tell, besides the prices, the best thing about GMG is not the ability to trade your 'used' digital games back in for credit, but that they give you a code for the games you buy that can be redeemed on Steam. I love Steam as a platform and as a store, but if there are other shops out there that give a better deal and still let me use Steam? That's incredible.

Comment: What is now known as Origin was EA download manager in January and since they have the same prices but in different currencies mexicans were lucky for a few hours and we got Crysis 2 for 60 pesos (less than 6 USD) because of that. I am not a fan of EA, but I believe we must have several options, I love steam but competition is better for all os us.

Comment: This is pretty much the store for any PC gamer in their late 20s and anyone who wants to play classic games without having to hunt though their dad's or brother's collection for tons of cds and floppy disks. The selection is tight and all the games are DRM-free. Plus, you can get the Witcher for $5 there when it's on sale and that is a huge plus for me.

Comment: The GamersGate shop is somewhat lacking in discounts and sales, but it has many more games than Steam. Also, there doesn't seem to be bans for using proxies, which is a nice plus in my book :P I personally use only GG and Steam for my digital game purchases; they recently added an experience points system, which nets better offers the higher your level is, and a minion, which gives better offers on some genres (depending on the minion)

Comment: GOG has some of the best classic games on the net. Their prices can rarely be beaten and best of all, they are DRM Free! I've used this company many times before and they've never disappointed me. All of the great games are updated and run on newer OS and hardware.

Comment: That is a bit of a double-edged sword. Like just the other day I actually got a hard copy of Shogun 2 and thought about how awesome it was going to be to just install and and go to town; maybe a few minor updates here and there. Welp, Steam had other plans... so after installing the 16 gig monstrosity, it proceeded to download another 3 gigs in updates before I could play it. Though at least it is much better about it than GWFL is.

Comment: Indeed. I really loathed Steam at its inception for a number of reasons but it has turned into a pretty solid platform. It IS still DRM but at the end of the day it is definitely one of the better ones out there and the community features along with Steam In-game are pretty nice to have.

Comment: Beamdog is pretty low-key and it is somewhat difficult to really pick out anything distinctive about them amongst other digital retailers. Their selection is a bit anemic though not necessarily "bad", per se, just somewhat small and not very fleshed out with a somewhat piecemeal collection of titles. The service is client-driven, the design of which is nicely slick and usable in keeping with the rest of the retailer's presentation. This is a solid outlet but they really need to find their "niche" or some kind of angle to work if they intend to stick around a while.

Comment: Gamersgate brings a lot of good things to the table but is not without its share of issues. Their Blue Points system is one of the better ideas going for the customer since, hey, you can get games completely for free just by buying other games. A good variety of titles are offered including some of the more obscure which might not find a home elsewhere but of course, still including all the major AAA releases. Gamersgate also offers regular sales which feature droves of hugely discounted titles. They also look to roll out a selection of free, ad-supported games in the future. Community features reward users with Blue Points by asking and answering questions via the Game Tutor mechanic as well as giving rewards for things such as writing game reviews. On the less-good side, Gamersgate's download system can be a bit of a pain. While some titles may be advertised as "DRM Free", this is not 100% true. When you get a game from GG, you get a small Installer file which manages the download and installation of a given title. Once downloaded, you may keep the files on your hard drive to re-install at another time but you will still need to do so via the Installer, which validates itself on-line before installation. Without getting too technical, this is basically because the setup files are stored semi-encrypted and though there are ways around using the Installer so that you are actually able to backup your game data, the task is needlessly obfuscated and can be troublesome. While this is not a dire issue overall, it is a bit of a misrepresentation and can definitely get in the way of easily backing up games. Overall, Gamersgate is a solid outlet with a great promotional gimmick going for it in the Blue Points system and regular bouts of serious price slashing, even if they might lack Valve's marketing finesse. Of course if you are in the States, this is another one you may get inconsistent or slow download rates with.

Comment: Steam's greatest strength definitely lies in its client software and community features which lend the platform a slick, usable presentation. Unfortunately, this is also seen by some as its greatest drawback as all Steam titles are strictly tied to the client software as their own form of proprietary DRM. Despite this, the user is free to install the client and download their games virtually limitlessly, though only one PC may log into the associated account at the same time. An "offline" feature is provided to offer a bit more leeway on this aspect of the client. One truly standout function of the Steam client is the backup feature which will neatly package any or all of your games for transfer to the media of your choice. (Impulse is the only other client I know of offering this functionality, however, I have personally had little luck with it.) On top of a solid, functional client software, Steam runs what are arguably some of the best sales you are likely to find on PC games and has discovered the potent marketing power of virtual hats. If you don't mind having to be tied to the game client, Steam definitely has a lot on offer and clearly has not built its sizable user base by resting on its laurels.

Comment: The ability to trade in "used" titles could be a pretty sweet option for those who don't play for keeps. A minimal but functional client is required for downloading but does not need to be running in order to play games after installation. Most titles utilize SecuRom authentication for DRM, in order to allow the games to be "traded" back in. Green Man keeps regular promo discounts in rotation as well as typically offering very good prices on pre-orders. Good community interaction via social outlets and helpful interaction via e-mail. Only real drawback for me is the fact of them being based in the UK with myself in the States, thus not getting the best download rates.
