Fallout 3 is the third instalment in Bethesda’s internationally acclaimed “Fallout” series. The game was released on 28th October in the US for PC. Fallout’s official website (fallout.bethsoft.com) contains concept art, game reviews, downloadable content (trailers, developer diaries and tips) and forums. On the website, and interactive toolkit is also available for download, on which players can customise Fallout 3 and develop mods.
The game is set in 2277. Nuclear warfare has completely devastated most of North America. The survivors either live in underground vaults, or face the harsh conditions of the Capital Wasteland – full of horribly disfigured and dangerous creatures. The game’s protagonist (and the only playable character) is born in Vault 101. The initial minutes of gameplay show the player’s transformation from a newborn baby, to an adolescent, and finally an adult. When the player turns 19, his father goes missing. Amidst life threatening turmoil and chaos, the player escapes from the vault to find his father. His quest takes him across the vast Wasteland, where he visits several cities and meets many people. Following in his father’s footsteps, he realises that his father was not the man whom he believed him to be. With his father’s clouded past guiding him, the future of mankind is now in the player’s hands.
The gameplay is similar to that of most RPGs – you assume total control over your character. All the decisions that you make, the way you talk to people, and the ways in which quests are completed eventually decide the kind of person you become. Your character carries a wrist computer, on which you can view the map, review your objectives, check your health and body conditions, and manage and repair your weaponry. The player also has a “Karma” level – either good or evil – which is influenced by the player’s actions. Through the course of the game, you may acquire followers as well.
The game was well received with many positive responses, and got a superb rating of 9.0 on Gamespot. It was declared The Game of the year by IGN, and the best RPG by Gamespot. Bethesda released 5 expansion packs for download, which add missions to the game and alter its ending.
