Genre: Strategy | Platform: PC
“Shogun 2: Total War” is a real time strategy game developed by SEGA, and the second instalment in the Shogun: Total war series and is set in 16th century Japan. After the Shogun Ashikaga Yoshimasa died without producing an heir, there was strife among his relatives for the possession of the throne. This battle escalated into a nationwide civil war called the Onin War, in which entire Japan was divided into clans called daimyo. Each daimyo was led by a warlord, who fought with the others for control, and for the complete domination of all of Japan. The player starts as one of these warlords, in what was called the Sengoku Jidai, or “The Warring states period”.
Shogun 2 combines both real-time strategy and turn based strategy, as the player controls his clan both as a warlord and a military general. As a general, the player leads his warriors into war against other factions, and as a warlord he must oversee the economic development of his clan. Players can use any means necessary – military, economic or diplomatic to dominate and defeat other daimyo. The game’s developers have worked very hard on redefining the naval and siege battles. The game has a day-night cycle, and the terrain of Japan – mountains, plains, islands and water bodies make each battle a tactical challenge for the player. In addition to battle, a player can use his spies and secret agents to uncover the enemy’s weaknesses. The player must also keep his soldiers and clan-members loyal to him; otherwise he risks a rebellion within his own family.
