Mass Effect 3 is the third instalment in Electronic Arts’ “Mass Effect” series, and the final part of the trilogy. It was announced in December 2010, and is scheduled to be released in 2011. Many gaming websites have already christened it “The Most Awaited Game of 2011”.

After killing the traitor Saren and defending the galaxy from the return of the mighty Reapers, Commander Shephard is believed to be killed in the explosion that destroyed his ship, Normandy. However, he is resurrected by Cerebrus, and a mysterious figure known only as the Illusive Man implores Shepard to save the galaxy once more. After assembling a team (which includes many of his original crew members) Shepard sets out on a suicide mission to destroy an alien force known as the Collectors.

In Mass effect 3, war has now reached earth. A race of terrifying alien machines has invaded our home. Now, it is up to Commander Shepard to rally all the races of the universe to our cause. Humanity must fight side by side with all the species in the galaxy to defeat this new threat. As was the case in Mass Effect 2, players can import their profile from previous Mass Effect games. In doing so, the game follows the path chosen by the player, rather than a canon storyline.

Mass Effect 3 is still in development, but it is being speculated that it will have richer RPG elements than its predecessors. The weapon, armour and appearance customisation are going to see an overhaul. The developers have also hinted that vehicular combat may be present in the game (the Mako combat vehicle did not appear in Mass Effect 2). The developers have also decided to release several Downloadable content (DLC) for the Mass Effect series, which will supplement the original storyline.
