Borderlands is a game which combines elements from two of the most popular video game genres: Role Playing Games (RPGs) and First Person Shooters (FPS). It was released in October 2010 for the PC, and has garnered positive feedback from gamers and critics.

Players start the game by selecting a character from the four presets available: Lilith (The Siren), Roland (a soldier), Brick (a Berserker) and Mordecai (a hunter). Like most RPGs, the player has to complete a series of quests to complete the game. Each quest rewards the player with experience as well as bonus items. After accumulating a set amount of XP, the player can level up, and allocate skill points to various subdivisions of the base class. Like other games of its genre, such as “Fallout” and “Dragon age”, enemies drop items when killed. However, these items spawn randomly, giving a different gaming experience for every playthrough.

The game is set on a planet named Pandora (ring any bells?), whose vast deposits of ores and minerals have attracted fortune seekers and big companies alike. The player is one of the many colonisers who have arrived on the planet in order to get rich. Another quest drives these people – to find the “Vault”. The vault is an alien technology of unimaginable power, and if it falls into the wrong hands it would put the entire human population in jeopardy. When a mercenary captain steals the vault key, it is upto the player to stop him and put things right.

Borderlands was released via digital download as well as retail sale. After its release, four expansion packs were also released – Claptrap’s New Robot Revolution, The secret Armoury of General Knoxx, Mad Moxxi’s underdome riot and The Zombie island of Dr. Ned. It has received good ratings from critics, and a second part to this game is already under development.
