“Fallout: New Vegas” is the latest addition to Bethesda Softworks’ “Fallout” series. It was released for multiple platforms in October 2010.

The game is set in 2281-200 years after a nuclear war destroyed most of the cities on the Earth, in what is called the “Mojave wasteland” (which comprises of modern day Nevada, California and Arizona. The player assumes the role of “The Courier”, who is attacked while he is on his way to making an important delivery. After recovering from this murderous attack, the player embarks upon a quest to find his attacker. The game’s story revolves around The Hoover Dam (which has been providing purified water to the wasteland since the events of Fallout 3) and the attempts of various groups to control it. The player’s decisions finally decide the fate of New Vegas.

The game, like all RPGs, gives a player complete control over his character. Completing quests gives the player experience, which can then be used to level up and learn more and more skills. Several followers can be acquired during the game – they choose to follow you or not based on your reputation. A unique addition is the ability to customise weaponry, which can provide various bonuses in combat. Interaction with characters and the environment has also seen an improvement over that in Fallout 3.

The game has received good ratings from critics, who have praised its gameplay. However, the presence of many in-game glitches, crashes and freezes may make it a frustrating experience. Bethesda Softworks has also released an expansion pack for download, which adds more in-game elements.

“Fallout: New Vegas” had sold over 5 million copies all over the world within a month of its release. It was also on the list of 2010’s top digital downloads.
