Dragon Age: Origins is probably the game that redefined Role Playing games. Released in November 2009 across multiple platforms, this game has seen extremely positive views from critics and gamers, and is one of the best role playing games till date.
The game is set in the mystical continent of Ferelden, which is the home to various races such as humans, elves and dwarves. The player begins by choosing the gender, race and sub-class (warrior, rogue or mage) for his character. Each character has his or her unique story. However, the broad picture is that the continent is on the brink of annihilation by nightmarish creatures known as the darkspawn – who attack in huge numbers and destroy all that lies before them. Due to the player’s heroics, he is conscripted into the ranks of the elite “Grey Wardens”, who are sworn to protect the land against the threat of the darkspawn. The player must now convince all the races and warriors of Ferelden to unite under a single banner, and defend their homeland against the darkspawn.
After choosing his character, the player has to complete certain quests. Some quests, known as Main quests, are essential to the story. Some, known as Side quests, are not essential to the story but provide additional experience when completed. After accumulating a certain amount of experience the player can level up, increasing attributes and adding skills. The player moves in a party of four, and the game allows the player to control any member of the party. Party members can be acquired as the game progresses, and the choices made by the player influence a party member’s approval. High approval can lead to romance options; and low approval can lead a party member to desert you. Many main quests also have multiple endings, depending upon the player’s decisions.
Bioware has also released several add-on packs for download, which add new levels, items and party members to the game. Some of these quests build upon the original game, while some are entirely different. An expansion pack, “Dragon Age Origins – Awakening” was released in March 2010.
The game received an overwhelming positive response from gamers. It was awarded IGN’s “Game of the year” in 2009, and many other awards from popular gaming websites. “Dragon Age: Origins” was the leader in 2009’s digital download charts, with over a million dollars being generated by the sales of downloadable content itself.
